Labour were about to come to grips with some of the immigration debate recently, this was largely due to the Home secretary Shabana Mahmood who had started to put in place a series of measures to come to grips with the issue.

Fast forward to now and she is facing strong resistance from the left of Labour not to enact anything that would make some concrete difference to the public’s opinion on the issue. Where things go next is interesting, as Kemi Badenoch has now offered to support Mahmood’s reforms through the House of Commons in the national interest.

This is good on a number of levels as it will help to ward of Reform UK and parties to the right of it meaning that solutions to immigration remain in the common ground position of public opinion, which is largely against retrospectively ripping up Indefinite leave to remain and ensuring the social rights that Europeans who have settled in the UK have under the withdrawal agreement of the UK-EU TCA.

This is all in stark contrast to the draconian position of Reform UK and Farage when it comes to the rights of settled Europeans living in the UK. Farage doesn’t respect the rule of law in any way when it comes to this issue.
